Student Wellbeing

A Strengths-driven Approach

Schools are facing unprecedented pressures on supporting students with their mental health and wellbeing. Schools’ increased focus on social and emotional learning has increased understanding and the vocabulary around mental health issues.

Research in positive psychology has shown us that people who know their strengths and use them frequently tend to feel happier, have better self-esteem, and are more likely to accomplish their goals.

Using Character Strengths to Self-reflect

Self-reflection is a key element in critical thinking.

Character strengths such as open-mindedness, humility and adaptability promote a student’s ability to self-reflect. Critical thinking not only helps students in terms of academic success, but also promotes the ideology that change is good and the need to do something differently isn’t indicative of failure but of learning.

Character strengths such as kindness, enthusiasm and teamwork create a positive working environment as they help to eliminate hostility between students and encourage them to help their peers where possible. This in turn creates a strong sense of community within the school and improves peer relationships, leading to better overall pupil wellbeing.
