“I am hoping that by coming out, I can be a role model, to help others come out if they want to … If they think this kid is brave enough to do this, I will be able to do it too.“
Jake began his football career at the age of seven when he joined Blackpool. He started out in their under-18s before signing his first professional contract with them in February 2022. Jake was worried about telling his family, his team-mates and the world that he was gay, but he knew it was something he needed to do. Not being true to himself was impacting his mental health and his ability to play at his best. But with that weight off his shoulders, Jake is playing better than ever. And with the support he has received, he is ready to show the world just how great a footballer he is, as well as be a role model for others.
When you know that telling the truth about something might cause others to turn away from or criticise you, are you brave enough to stay true to yourself?
