Mary Kom is an Indian boxer, politician, and incumbent Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. Kom is the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times, the only female boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer (male or female) to win eight World Championship medals.
Whilst successful today in sports and politics, she recognises her humble beginnings as a member of a family that worked as tenant farmers in the rural district of Manipur. Growing up, life was not always easy, but Mary’s perseverance kept her focused on what she wanted to achieve. She reminds those around her to stay the course when doing what you are passionate about.
