1987 –
COURAGE

“I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”

Elliot Page, star of Juno and Umbrella Academy, made headlines when he announced in December 2020 that he is trans and now uses pronouns he/they. It was an incredibly brave thing to do, but then Elliot has always been brave, whether it’s the movie roles he has chosen or speaking up about issues that are important to him. Elliot realises that his platform can help so many others struggling with their own issues. Elliot has fought through fear, judgments and discrimination to come to where he is now.

Courage is contagious – how does Elliot’s courage inspire you?

Courage is found in our amazing people in many different ways: Emmeline Pankhurst stood up for the rights of women; Mahatma Gandhi and Sarojini Naidu were courageous in the fight for Indian independence and Marie Curie showed courage in her scientific endeavours. Explore the website for numerous examples of courage and teaching resources on how to develop it ourselves.

Here are two ways to show courage in school this week. Put your hand up in class to have a go at the answer. Volunteer for something you wouldn’t normally do.
